coming later

coming later

Marokopa_ltle

was the waikato
along the road
to marokopa
land flattened
in the wet
the cloud a silvered
tussock stacked
across the sky
a man out
there in a far
paddock chopping
a log or stump
the wood letting
out a ‘thunk’
only when the
axe hit the top
of the swing back.
dad told me
the eye’s quicker
than the ear
the sound comes
after the light
saw the axe
whack into that
wood in silence
a clumsy man
i thought who
couldn’t keep
axe-fall and
axe-thump
together
the sound
coming later
like the poem

the sound
coming later
like the poem.
