In dream
‘Plato’s Academy’, the fresco by Raphael, painted circa 1509 – 1511; image sourced from joyofmuseums.com

you wrote
you’d dreamed
an owl came in
on a wave
of wing
through the
window opened
to star and field
to land in
a shock on
your shoulder,
told me
you’d met me
in dream, nothing
like i look in
that distant picture
of myself knowing
i never have managed
to resemble my own
image even in
mirrors,
your mother was
there too in that
dream factually as
she was and she
touched your hair,
whispered something
of the splendour seen
in renaissance skies,
a walk through
of plato’s academy,
a poet* was there
you did not see
but i did from
my
woken day,
i saw him toward
the ditch around
your dream, he waited
with hand outstretched
resting on the gunwale
of that leaf on the
muddy river
to ferry you
into his poem and
the underworld
of its world
.
