screamers
Panmure boatyard
december 2020

in the afternoon
gale the rigging
of those yachts,
jacked up
on stands in
the boatyard,
whips thin
and whistles
like
ghosts
through a
broken bottle
to the rigging of
those moored yachts
out there bucking in it,
their rigging returning
the spinning call
from stays,
the light
cashed out
in silver upon
an album
of sea
grays

Click on the link above to hear a reading of the poem. The accompanying sounds of wind in boat rigging were taken from the video ‘Sailboats Chiming in the Wind! 60mins “Sleep Video”‘ available on Youtube. I had wanted to record it at the boatyard, but it was impossible to organise the wind on the day.
