Nomindari's mother_Naran (2)
the smile on the Great Wall, 2002

after
your death
the raft of
bitterness
not yet
put out
from shore,
and still
i spy it
on distant
moments of
recall,
in those days
i gifted to
our friends
that photo of
you in the dawn
on the world’s
‘greatest’ wall,
that your people
you said showed
no respect to,
our having
slept there
through a
summer night
on its cool,
you in my shirt,
because you loved
its ocean rush of
colours and
smiling
the world’s
greatest smile
no history
written
ever
shall
explain,
no wall
no matter
how many years,
stones, minutes
in its making
could
withstand

The music for the reading is from the second movement ‘Arietta. Adagio molto semplice e cantabile’ of Beethoven’s Sonata No. 32 in C Minor, Op. 111 in a 1956 recording by Glenn Gould.
