over sunken
branch the

the plank of its
shadow on the
waters
full tide that
will tip to
shallows this

Hillary

wouldn’t stick
your neck out
for any faith
though had
listened in
earnest to
many a good
follower,
lending a hand
made more sense,
a rope to get
us on the way,
the highest climb*
of all you showed
the shift,
‘colonial
conqueror’
become
companion in
endeavour,
at the end just
two men* getting
the job done
not bickering the
order, no deference

laid into us stepping
in against any
wall however
angled against it
blowing further dry
the dry grass
rattling the hedges
stripping cloud
off that hard
winter sky
blowing anything
of that old year
left standing
to far pieces
a plastic
bag riding
drunk on its
bulge upward
into the blue
