tea at night

tea at night
dedicated to Okakura, Kazuko

book of tea

in the
cold i drink
a cup of tea
to taste the
warmth
not of
heated water
that soon
cools,
rather,
the bitter
growth in sun
that sweetens
in being
picked,
to know
in taste
that we found
something better
than simply
what the well
could offer
in buckets,
good as it
was,
that
we lifted
the water
higher in a
mantle of
taste.

  1. I’d written, prior to reading your poem, the line:’… Evolutionary forms capable of self-adjusting…’ and this tea poem, on second reading, is saying the same thing I think. and the tannin taste can fill the mouth …like a lamp-mantle
