opened the door
at dawn
to let the
cat out
trying to
sleep again
the stars
i glimpsed
in that chill
block of sky
stayed under
my eyelids
one shone
like water
mounting
pebbles in a
stream how it
thins and deepens
onward in passing
over them
a wonder that
never quite
breaks to the
surface
a wonder
in passing
our passing
in wonder
star of
soliloquy
we follow
to the end
of voice
star
of soliloquy
that takes
us down
to sleep
in the
undertow
so deep

The music for the reading is from ‘Pohádka’ (A Tale) for cello and piano by Leoš Janáček (1852-1928), interpreted here by Mikael Ericsson, cello and František Malý, piano.
