night storm song

night storm song

oh little ship of land,
bear up , bear up*,
little ship of Aotearoa,
the trees on your deck
are dancing to the
glancing violin
bow of air, tether
your lines of wind,
furl those sails of
cloud on the high spars,
a moon in the crow’s nest,
and ride out the storm,
ride out the storm,
bear up little ship
in the dark

* ‘bear up’ is a nautical term meaning to point the bow into the wind.  In a storm ‘bearing up’ keeps the ship pointed into the oncoming waves which lessons their impact on the hull (as compared to the waves coming abeam)
