regret

      regret

from the war
memorial up on
the hill on such a
morning you
look out on
the sea oiled
in summer sky
the islands damp
with tree shadow
or seared in tinder
pasture the
coromandels
like a dusk left
out in the day
only the ridge
remains.

reading the names
in stone and
repainted letters
of these local men
who died in the
‘Great War’
call them brave
call them duped
call them fools
yet here you
taste the regret,
simply said
that they never
made it up
this path
again for
such
a
morning
ever
