That morning I happened to look down Anderson Ave, and so the poem happened…

look down
anderson ave,
say,
& why not,
straight to
the sea
to see what
kind of day
it is on
the waters
a sparkler
or a
dull clouded
day sunk
on itself
from the start
nasty with the
bite of wind
a view just
the breadth
of this street
enough
the breadth
of this page
to glimpse
the heart of
this man
in fine
fettle
or
troubled,
morose
moon of
a mood

so we write
and so our
art is just
for the
view

The music is from the second movement, ‘Silentium’ of the ‘Tabula Rasa’, a double concerto for two solo violins, prepared piano, and chamber orchestra by Arvo Pärt, here performed by the Bournemouth Sinfonietta.
