beyond the pale

beyond the pale
to Philip Seymour Hoffman RIP

beyond the pale
Philip Seymour Hoffman in ‘The Master’.

i never
knew you
in what
we call
‘real life’
only knew you
in your ‘performances’
on screen
those off-camera
the private agonies
cried out between
you and the mirror
who would guess
or want to guess
knowing you only
for what you
showed in
something beyond
the pale beyond
the crafted few
seconds of word
traded as the
funny guy the
kind nurse* the
tortured darkening
i would love
to have talked
with you about
somewhere over a
cup of coffee by a
wide window to
the street
asked you about
that something you
always pulled off
how you
brought out more
in lonely takes between
the lens and lights than
i have ever shown
in living face
to face and
you showed
that failing human
element, the flaw
in the broadness
of heart ever
in your eyes
in your voice
even in the
of victory
